Ephemera Obscura is exhibition of recent and retrospective work by Ant Cummins, a graphic designer and photographer from Sydney’s Inner West.
Ephemera Obscura was conceived as a crossover between the two competing themes in Ant’s photography practice; his landscapes and his toy photography.
The basic objective was to digitally merge images from both and use a style reminiscent of the Pictorialists from the late 19th and 20th centuries, “enobling” the images in a modern context.
This idea of merging two artistic practices was one he had explored in a previous project, The Space Between.
The fleeting nature of imagery in the social media age, combined with the timelessness of early pinhole photography, inspired the exhibition’s title.
During high school, Ant was often seen out and about with his grandfather’s Nikon SLR, and while at the University of Newcastle studying Graphic Design, became interested in the artistic applications of instant photography. The exhibition includes recent works of his landscapes and urban scenes, taken with his trusty X-T3, a Lomo’Instant Automat Glass, a Mint TL70 and a Poloroid SX-70 Land Camera Model 2.
His most recent project, Top Toy Pics, began as an after-school activity with his daughter, capturing photos of her toys. It soon evolved, reflecting Ant’s passion for storytelling, science fiction, pop culture, and Japanese anime.
Ephemera Obscura will be on at Luna Studio, from 10 to 20 December 2024, closed Sunday 15 December, at 465 King Street. Newtown NSW 2042. The opening night is Thursday 12 December.
